Isaac Humphries will bring a touch of Hollywood to the Adelaide Fringe when he takes to the stage this week.
The Adelaide 36ers big man will wear a custom fur coat by leading US designer Michael Ngo when he performs his new show, More of Me, in the Garden of Unearthly Delights.
A close friend of Humphries, Ngo has created pieces for Ariana Grande, Shakira, Lizzo, Paris Hilton and last year, designed the spacesuit for Beyoncé’s Super Bowl commercial.
“Anyone who is anyone has worn a Michael Ngo piece and now I get to bring a bit of international flair to the Fringe,” says Humphries, the only openly gay player in the NBL.
The 213cm singer will also wear a vest by Mount Gambier’s Amy Smith from Luv Luv Made, and suit pants by bespoke Adelaide tailor, Michael Bois, from Beg Your Pardon.
Humphries, 27, said More of Me has been six months in the planning and is his most personal show yet.
“I’m sharing more about who I am... it’s the vulnerable side of me, the artist,” he said.
“As an athlete, I have a persona on court but there’s so much more to all of us.”
Humphries was playing with Melbourne United when he came out in 2024 and is one of just two basketballers to have publicly come out across the globe.
Better known for his skills on the basketball court, Humphries said now he’s just as comfortable on stage in front of an audience.
“I love it, there’s no nerves... I crave that adrenaline rush I get from performing,” he said.
“There’s a lot of pressure playing basketball, a lot of unknowns. But I walk onto the stage knowing exactly how it’s going to go. That’s probably the biggest difference.”
Humphries said the support he’s received from his Sixers teammates has been incredible, and several of the squad will be in the crowd this Saturday night.
He’s already looking to the future and a career away from the sporting arena.
“I can’t play (basketball) forever so the goal of doing all this now is creating a pathway I can move into when I have to hang up the laces,” Humphries said.
“It’s obviously a passion of mine and it’s of course something I’d love to explore post-basketball.
“But you have to make yourself known and share your craft with people before you commit fully so that’s what I’m doing now.”
