THE Empire Theatre has announced what shows will go ahead and those that will not in response to the "rapidly changing situation associated with COVID-19".
Australian favourite, The Sapphires, will be performed at the Empire Theatre on Thursday at 7.30pm as originally scheduled, albeit with an audience capped at 470 patrons.
Melinda Schneider - A Farewell to Doris will also proceed on Saturday, March 21 at 7.30pm.
Empire Theatres general manager Kerry Saul said patrons attending the performances would be encouraged to practice social distancing within the 1560 seat venue.
"We are facilitating this by allowing patrons to self-select their seating in the auditorium and move away from other patrons within the audience to ensure they feel comfortable," Mr Saul said.
"Cleaning at the Empire Theatre has been increased in frequency, with our cleaning team sterilising all high touch areas regularly, both pre-show and post show.
"With all that said however, if patrons are uncomfortable attending The Sapphires this week, we will be offering refunds on this occasion."
The Curious Arts Festival, which includes a perf
ormance by Australian comedian Judith Lucy, has been postponed to a soon to be confirmed date later in the year.
A Curious Arts Festival representative said it was with great regret they had postponed the festival.
"The festival's priority is the health and wellbeing of audiences, artists, volunteers and the wider community and while we are naturally disappointed, we feel that postponing to a later date will mean we can all enjoy a celebration of curious arts without the concerns that surround us all currently," the representative said.
Moving forward, the plan for future performances at the Empire Theatre has not yet been determined and more information regarding upcoming performances will be released as it becomes available.
The Empire Theatres Board and Management team have been actively monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will promptly act on any updated advice from the Australian Government Department of Health and the Queensland Government.
The Empire Theatres is also acting on advice from Live Performance Australia which is the peak body for the live performance industry.
