A SYDNEY man is the owner of a new luxury car after winning a competition run by Wellcamp airport.

A SYDNEY man is the owner of a new luxury car after winning a competition run by Wellcamp airport.

Sydney father-of-two Dave O'Connell made a special trip to Toowoomba late last year to see his 13-year-old niece star in the Broadway hit musical Annie at the Empire Theatre.

When his father dropped him off at the airport to fly back to Sydney he killed time filling out an entry form to win a new Audi A1 luxury car.

He never gave the competition a second thought so when the phone rang on Sunday he was bracing for a telemarketer.

"There was no caller id on the phone when it rang and I assumed it was just another telemarketer so I was a little gruff when I said 'hello'.

"When I realised it was someone from Wellcamp airport, I thought I'd left something behind.''

Mr O'Connell said when he was eventually told he had won a new car he was absolutely awestruck and shocked.

Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport developer John Wagner said the team decided to give away the car to thank travellers and the local community, who have supported air services into and out of the airport over the past two years.

"It's not every day an airport runs a competition to win a car but we're the new kid on the aviation block and we thought it was a great idea to support patronage to Australia's newest privately-owned public airport," says Mr Wagner.

He says thousands of travellers, who had either flown into or out of the airport, had entered the competition.

"We now have 74 services into and out of Wellcamp every week and expect to add more services next year," says Mr Wagner, whose family built and opened the airport in late 2014.
