Former footy great Sam Newman has stepped out with his close companion Sue Stanley.

Despite looking dapper in a tuxedo with matching black and white shoes, Newman reluctantly posed for a picture with Stanley at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame induction and awards dinner on Monday night at Crown.

Stanley is an aerobics queen who was inducted as a Hall of Fame member in 1998.

“It’s her night, I’m just coming along — her handbag if you will,’’ Newman told the Herald Sun.

A fit and tanned Stanley said it was special to catch up with fellow members of the Hall of Fame.

The pair has just returned from a four month boat trip to Queensland, taking Newman’s 66-foot yacht ‘Angst’ up to Queensland.

They said they are working on plans for a new adventure.

All present members of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame were introduced to the crowd and gathered on stage.

Olympics golden girls Jessica and Noemie Fox claimed the Don Award for the most inspiring moment and their feats at the Paris Games.

“It’s a huge honour and seeing all the images of all the legends who came before us, it’s incredible to reflect on the journey we’ve had,” Jessica said.

“The year we’ve had, individually and together is just the most magical thing. The emotion that came through, it’s very special to know we’ve been able to inspire people like others have inspired us.”

Noemie added: “To have Jess turn into my biggest supporter on the sidelines and to have her jump in the water to hug me after … it was just incredible. One of those moments in life you just want to keep reliving.”

Among the 1000 guests were new inductees Sally Pearson, Mick Fanning, Mark Skaife and Gerry Ryan, as well as sporting greats including Dawn Fraser, Raelene Boyle, Ken Rosewall, Louise Sauvage, Anna Meares, Layne Beachley, Kevin Sheedy, Lauren Jackson, Alisa Camplin and Chris Judd.

“I’m shocked really because am I at that stage of my life already,” athlete Pearson said.

“It’s a little bit overwhelming, we are in the company of greatness, the best in our sports and in our fields. It’s so exciting to be amongst that and be honoured with that. I feel so lucky to be here.”

Surfing hero Fanning said he thought it was a wrong number when he got the call.

“It’s a huge honour,” he said.

“To be inducted I was chuffed. To be among the likes of some of Australia’s greats but also the world, I’m just happy I went out there and tried my best.”
