Revealed: West Gate Tunnel project: Exclusive pictures of massive Victorian road project

Revealed: The exclusive aerial photographs that show the progress of one of the state’s most important and ambitious traffic projects.

Victoria West Gate Tunnel project 'monumentally mishandled' by all parties

These are the exclusive images that show just how much work has been done on the massive West Gate Tunnel project.

Photos from aerial imagery company Nearmap, give a details look at the progress of work at two construction sits for the project, at Brooklyn and Yarraville.

The road, which will connect the West Gate Freeway to CityLink, is now expected to open in late 2025 — three years behind schedule and $3.92bn over budget.

The shots from above are of the locations from before works started in 2018 and in December last year.

Summer works on the West Gate Freeway to widen it have already begun.

Until late February, these works will include the closure of Williamstown Rd beneath the freeway, as well as city bound entry and exit ramps.

Motorists are urged to plan their journeys carefully to avoid traffic snarls or adding extra travel time to their journey.

“We are delivering a huge program of works along the West Gate Freeway and Williamstown Road to add extra lanes, upgrade ramps and strengthen bridges as part the West Gate Tunnel Project,” a government spokeswoman said.

“The West Gate Tunnel will provide an alternative route to the West Gate Bridge — taking thousands of trucks off local roads in the inner west and slashing travel times from the Western suburbs to the CBD.”

The West Gate Tunnel was expected to be built by 2022, but a dispute between tolling giant and project proponent Transurban and its builders John Holland and CPB means it will now be delivered late.

Ramp closures until the end of February include:

*M80 Ring Road ramp to the Princes Freeway (Geelong-bound);

*West Gate Freeway outbound exit ramp to the M80 Ring Road (Greensborough-bound);

*Williamstown Road inbound entry ramp to the West Gate Freeway;

*Geelong Road outbound entry ramp to Princes Freeway lane;

*Princes Freeway lane from Geelong Rd outbound entry ramp to Gordon Luck Ave; and

*Single inbound lane on the West Gate Freeway over Williamstown Rd

The stunning aerial imagery is from Australian location intelligence company Nearmap. The company provides government organisations, architectural, construction and engineering firms, and other companies, with easy, instant access to high resolution aerial imagery, city-scale 3D content, artificial intelligence data sets, and geospatial tools to assist with urban planning, monitoring and development projects in Australia, New Zealand, and North America.
