Sickening animal cruelty in Southern Queensland haunts region’s wildlife expert

A grim find next to a major road in southern Queensland has been compared to a crime scene, with one animal rescuer saying the sick scene was simply “disgusting”. WARNING: GRAPHIC

A brutal scene on the side of the road akin to something out of a horror film is the last thing a jogger in Southern Queensland expected to see on her morning run.

A local woman in the Inglewood area stumbled across the disturbing site early on Monday morning, finding three animals mutilated next to the road.

Two Eastern Grey Kangaroos and a Wallaroo – two species that would not usually band together in the wild – were found dumped in a sickening spectacle.

Witnesses and locals believe they were killed elsewhere before being dumped next to the road, with legs smashed and the animal’s decapitated.

Sickening, a young Joey was left unharmed in the pouch of one of the Kangaroos which alerted the jogger earlier this week.

The jogger told a responder that even with headphones on and music blaring, the sounds of the Joey in distress alerted her to the grizzly scene.

Wildlife Empire, a wildlife sanctuary based at Canning Creek, shared the disturbing footage on Monday.

News Corp has chosen not to show the graphic footage.

“How anyone can be so God-damn barbaric is just completely beyond me,” shelter operator Tennille Bankes said.

“That’s cruel and inhumane what they did to those kangaroos, but leaving that joey there is bloody disgusting.”

Ms Bankes said the matter would be referred to the police, RSPCA Queensland, and the state government.

Ms Bankes said the graphic scene was “disheartening” for people like her, who worked three jobs to provide rehabilitation for native animals.

“It was a pretty brutal day yesterday, this is our national emblem and to treat it like s––– is disgusting,” she said.

“You could see it easily from the road, and just off the main highway to Inglewood, whoever did it clearly didn’t give a toss.

“I think this happens more than people think – my theory is it was roo shooter … because they were killed elsewhere and dumped. I have no doubt in my mind they knew the baby was there.”

Ms Bankes said the incident was a “kick in the guts”, who estimated the cost to raise a Joey is in the thousands of her own money.

“It’s disheartening to see something like that with people coming in the middle of the night and realising a life is worth nothing to people.

“If they have a licence it needs to be revoked, truly disgusting.”
