A remote Queensland town may have the answer to unlocking the housing crisis that’s continued to sweep across the nation.
Since initiating its own homeowners grant four years ago, the tiny town of Quilpie has ensured housing remained at the forefront, officially unveiling stage 1 of a new Townhouse Development.
The first stage of a 30-lot development has seen six two-storey townhouses completed and ready for their new occupants to begin moving in.
In a statement Quilpie Shire Council mayor Ben Hall said council was committed to ongoing investment to help ease the housing shortage in the region.
“We introduced a unique Homeowner Grant Scheme that resulted in 13 blocks of land sold since 2021, then Quilpie was the first region to bring modular homes to outback Queensland and now we’ve bought stage 1 of another housing development to fruition,” he said.
“We’re very focused on addressing the issue of housing availability that impacts nearly every town in outback Queensland. We’ve been ahead of the curve in coming up with solutions that have attracted new residents to our shire and resulted in new home builds.
“It’s a legacy that I’ve been very happy to take the baton on and this new townhouse development will help meet the growing demand for accommodation in the region.”
Ideally located near the central hub of town, the Townhouse Development offers residents convenient access to essential amenities, including the local swimming pool, hospital, and schools.
The project is repurposing the former Shire Works Depot after council relocated to an upgraded depot facility in 2016.
“There are employment opportunities in Quilpie, and we’re renowned as one of the friendliest towns in the outback and our facilities and lifestyle make us a very liveable town,” Mr Hall said.
“The Townhouse Project will help ensure that the region remains an attractive place to live and work.”
The vision was brought to life by Quilpie Shire Council successfully securing state government funding through the 2024-28 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.
