A young man who decided to show off his Holden Commodore SS by skidding onto a busy highway was caught off guard by the unmarked police car witnessing the unamusing show.
Andrew Dale Blaxland, 21, pleaded guilty in Warwick Magistrates Court on June 9 to one count of wilfully making unnecessary noise or smoke.
The court was told police in an unmarked vehicle were patrolling the Cunningham Highway at Rosenthal Heights in January 2025 when they caught Blaxland’s vehicle skidding onto the highway.
Police prosecutor Phil Donaldson told the court the officers watched as the vehicle revved loudly as it exited Batterham St, screeching as the tyres lost traction.
The court was told the vehicle was heading directly towards the unmarked police vehicle at a 45-degree angle as Blaxland maintained the skidding motion.
Around 20m of black tyre marks were left on the road, the court was told.
Blaxland was pulled over by police shortly after, explaining that he had lost control of the vehicle due to loose gravel on the road and misjudged an oncoming vehicle, accelerating quickly to avoid incident.
His solicitor Phil Crook told the court his client’s vehicle was impounded and has remained in storage, costing him $2000 in fees.
Mr Crook told the court Blaxland has since put the Commodore up for sale to purchase a more family friendly vehicle, with his partner expected to give birth to their first child in July.
Magistrate Janice Crawford ordered Blaxland pay a fine of $350.
A conviction was recorded.
