Making a difference one hair at a time has led to one Toowoomba business being named Queensland’s first regional sustainable salon.

Classic Hair Lounge owner Kate Ruijter has been dreaming of ways to transform the hair and beauty industry for years.

Ms Ruijter’s two hair salons and beauty therapy store recently received the title by Sustainable Salons – a first for Toowoomba and regional Queensland.

“We have been working with Sustainable Salons for the last 10 months to deliver this movement and our team are so excited,” she said.

“It’s always been our goal to build the confidence of our clients through hair and beauty treatments but to also change the world.”

The Toowoomba business has implemented many strategies to make a social and environmental impact.

From scooping up leftover hair which is use to make boom stockings to scoop up oil spills from the ocean to donating all paper, plastics and metals to fund OzHarvest meals.

“Proceeds from the materials used during a full head of foils service will go towards providing one meal for someone in need,” Ms Ruijter said.

“I would love other hair and beauty salons in Toowoomba to reach out to me so I can help support them to join the movement.”

The hair salon is also working to reduce landfill by gifting biodegradable hair towels to clients who use them as weed mats for the garden or as a cleaning cloth, using eco-friendly shower heads and special disposable gloves that break down over five years instead of 500.

Clients will be charged an additional once off, tax-deductible payment of $3 for these services which is donated to Sustainable Salons and helps to create a brighter future for the industry.
