Hugely popular, Great Barrier Reef-addicted YouTubers Josh, Larissa and adventure dog Tyro have reeled in more than 210,000 subscribers promoting the great North Queensland fishing lifestyle.

Josh Matulis and partner Larissa Rogers moved from the Gold Coast to Cairns in 2020 posting their first professionally edited 6-minute video that September.

He said that rather than focusing on simply the videos, fans of the Reef Addicts channel wanted to see more of the pair and their larger-than-life personalities in front of the camera.

Mr Matulis said 210,000 subscribers was okay, but they were gunning for the magic million.

He said the couple’s secret weapon to help them achieve their goal was similarly addicted Tyro, an Australian Kelpie, Border Collie cross.

“He’s just like fishing obsessed, like it’s ridiculous,” he said.

“And that’s a lot of our feedback, is that you’re ultra-Australian, not stupid bogan, but just very Australian.”

Mr Matulis, an AFL tragic originally from Melbourne and part-time chippy, said he and his beauty-therapist partner were blessed living so close to the Great Barrier Reef and had the ability to adventure from Lockhart to Airlie Beach and everywhere in between.

“Anywhere the weather’s good, we just chase it,” he said.

“It’s an unreal spot that we get to show off, I think the Great Barrier Reef has got to be one of the best fishing and spear-fishing spots in the world.”

He said he and Ms Rogers had travelled and fished around Australia, but nothing compared to “what we’ve got here”.

Mr Matulis said life was good, with the income from the Reef Addicts channel not only funding their modest lifestyle, a couple of properties and a new boat that was being delivered on Wednesday.

“I think the biggest feedback for our channel is that we are relatable, we just keep it real, we’re not in $500,000 boats hitting the reef, we’re in a tinny or a jet ski or something small,” he said.

“We’re relatable to the general Aussie fella, everyone can get on board and do what we do, it’s not out of reach.”

In addition to the YouTube channel and sponsorship, the couple also benefitted from merchandising the Reef Addict brand.
