BREAKING: Developers have promised no prisoners convicted of rape, molestation or murder will be housed at a new detention facility near Toowoomba.
The low-custody work camp will be located in the grounds of the Woolshed at Jondaryan, about 40km west of Toowoomba.
The proposed detention facility will be a secure, low-custody work camp in which prisoners will undertake supervised work throughout the complex grounds and in the surrounding region.
Any works conducted off site will be facilitated via the secure transport of prisoners in a 14-person mini-bus.
The facility will house a maximum of 12 'low-risk prisoners' (none of which have been convicted or incarcerated for crimes involving rape, molestation or murder), and two Department of Corrective Services Officers who will supervise the prisoners at all times.
Additional staff will include an on-site cook/chef.
Prisoner duties will involve general maintenance of the community facility, including lawn moving, maintenance and building and restoration works and various and similar labouring duties for other community facilities, farms and business within the region.
The facility will operate as part of the State Government Department of Corrective Services 'prison work program' which has been operating since the 1990s, when low risk prisoners assisted with flood clean-up efforts in Charleville.
Low-risk work camp prisoners have previously worked in the Toowoomba region, with the latest example being during the 2011 flood clean-up events.
There are currently 13 permanent work camps located across Queensland, including nearby locations at Charleville and Warwick.
Only low security prisoners who satisfy certain criteria are considered for work programs and the security at these facilities has been maintained to the highest level.
