COMMUTERS between Highfields and Toowoomba could soon be spending half an hour more a day behind the wheel as work on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing surges ahead.

Nexus Infrastructure, the company building the Second Range Crossing, will start the final construction stage for the New England Highway realignment in May.

In a letter sent to Highfields residents, the company said the works in the Mount Kynoch area would start on May 4.

"Please allow an additional 10-15 minutes for your travel time while we carry out these works," the letter said.

"At the end of these works, traffic will be permanently switched on to the new section of the New England Highway which includes travelling over the dual arch bridges above the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

"Traffic changes will involve lane closures during peak-traffic periods, reduced speed limits and traffic switches."

Nexus said the work was expected to take four weeks, weather and construction conditions permitting.

"Nexus will not be impacting traffic on Goombungee Rd while these works take place on the New England Highway," the company said.
