Ask Whitsunday’s best hairdresser for the secret to her salon’s success and you will not hear her talking herself up.

For Kendell Richardson, it takes a team effort to be a cut above the rest, and she is much more keen to share the spotlight with her colleagues than claim the crown for herself.

But voters evidently thought Ms Richardson a deserving winner, and it is not hard to see why.

The lifelong Proserpine local opened her own salon, Urban Hair and Beauty Lounge, at just 21 years old, and in the five years since has taken on three employees to help service her loyal clientele.

Ms Richardson set out to design a salon that stood out among its competitors, with a unique “modern rustic” vibe.

But beyond the aesthetics, she believes what keeps clients coming back is the overall atmosphere, and the team’s focus on providing an experience that feels more like a treat than anything else.

“We want to make clients feel at home, like they’re part of the ‘family’ as well. It’s quite a personal experience,” Ms Richardson said.

Whether someone wants their greys covered up, their box-dye disaster fixed up, or their look updated in line with the latest Instagram trend, the team strives to accommodate all clients’ needs.

As Ms Richardson puts it: “We can do someone’s first haircut to their last”.
