Whitsunday residents and visitors will enjoy a more accessible public fishing jetty if a new “aspirational” council plan gets enough support to become a reality.
A new $2 million Cannonvale fishing jetty is on the list of priority projects for which Whitsunday Regional Council will pursue external funding as part of a new Greater Airlie Beach Masterplan.
The 45m long, 3m wide jetty would be placed next to the footings of the old Cannonvale jetty which suffered cyclone damage in the late 1950s, and would meet the need for a shore fishing facility closer to town than the popular Shute Harbour, which requires a vehicle to access.
Other projects included in the draft plan, designed to “enhance liveability, health, wellbeing, town beautification and small business success” include more than $3.2 million in upgrades to Cannonvale Lakes Park, and a $100,000 investigation into further redevelopment of the Shute Harbour marine terminal incorporating improved boat trailer parking arrangements.
The plan states many of its projects are at inception stage without specified timeframes for completion. It further states most of the projects, including the proposed jetty, will require external grant funding to complete.
Whitsunday residents will have their chance to contribute to the plan as the council releases it for public comment in November and December, along with a Draft Airlie Beach Foreshore Land Management Plan.
Councillors unanimously endorsed the draft masterplan at their October 13 meeting at Collinsville, however Crs Al Grundy and Mike Brunker highlighted gaps including transport infrastructure and selecting a site for a proposed Airlie Beach cemetery.
Development Services Director Neil McGaffin said transport was included in its own separate strategic plan, which was under development, while the proposed cemetery could be included as part of a separate “growth strategy”.
