Despite online rumours that a local school musical was at risk due to low ticket sales, the school says it is a highlight on the school calendar and not going anywhere.
Twice a year St Catherine’s Catholic College puts on their own musical, offering students from Years 6 to 12 the chance to get involved in the arts and show off their talents.
St Catherine’s Catholic College Principal, Katherine Nelson, said this year they are presenting the classic and lively production, The Music Man, which has allowed for broader student involvement with instrumental students also getting involved.
“It offers the chance to get involved both onstage and behind the scenes – from performing in the cast to playing in the band or supporting backstage,” she said.
“Our students have been rehearsing since last year, including through holidays and weekends, and they’re so proud of what they’ve created.
“We’re hoping for full houses and a wonderful celebration of student talent, open to the entire Whitsundays community.”
She said putting on the musical was rewarding both for students and for staff.
“For students, the experience is enormous – it builds confidence, resilience and friendships across all year levels, and often becomes a highlight of their schooling journey,” she said.
“For staff, it’s a true labour of love.
“They volunteer countless hours to mentor students and bring the production to life.”
She added that despite some chatter online, the future of the school’s musicals were not dependent on the financial outcome of this one.
“St Catherine’s remains committed to providing enriching experiences for our students both in and beyond the classroom,” she said.
“With the ongoing passion of our staff and the talent of our students, we’re confident our musicals will continue to flourish for years to come.”
She encouraged people to attend the musical and show their support because to them, it’s more than just a show.
“It’s the result of months of dedication, teamwork, and commitment,” she said.
“By attending, you’re supporting young people who’ve worked incredibly hard and you’re helping to keep the arts alive in our school and wider community.”
Tickets to this weekend’s shows are available for purchase from the Proserpine Entertainment Centre.
