A mine operator has been jailed for evading police in what a Qld court heard was a “dangerous” trip down the Bruce Hwy by someone with an “unenviable” criminal record.
Timothy Don Bowman was speeding on the highway at Proserpine when police activated lights and sirens to make him aware they wanted him to pull over, but he instead, he increased his speed.
The 42-year-old then passed another police car and increased his speed to approximately 130 km/h to evade them, Proserpine Magistrates Court heard this week.
Sabine Scott from McKays Solicitors told the court her client was on a return to prison warrant and wanted to see his partner as he knew once he was arrested it would be some time before he saw her again.
She said Bowman was also on parole for drug matters at the time of the offending.
Magistrate Anna Smith said it was a “dangerous” act to evade police and noted Bowman’s “unenviable” seven-page history.
Bowman appeared in court via video from custody, pleading guilty to driving unlicensed and evading police as well as driving unregistered and driving uninsured from a previous incident in the Jubilee Tavern carpark.
For driving unlicensed he was disqualified from holding a driver's license for six months.
For evading police, he was sentenced to 50 days imprisonment with 166 days' time served and disqualified from holding a license for two years.
He was given a parole eligibility date of July 25.
He was convicted and not further punished for driving unregistered and driving uninsured.
Convictions were recorded for all the charges.
The court heard Bowman still had a number of other charges for which registry committal documents had been received by the prosecution, including seven counts of supplying drugs and possession of drugs.
Those charges were adjourned to August 18 for mention.
