A stalker has learned his fate for harassing a neighbour so much she had to move away and was “too afraid” to return.

Wilson Beach man Jace Adam Gowans lived just 200 meters from his victim and his offending involved sending multiple messages over social media and even going to her home three times.

Between 3 October and 22 November, 2024 the 32 year old sent Facebook messages to the woman indicating he knew of her movements and location.

Proserpine Magistrates Court heard on 4 October, 2024 at 5.33am the victim received a Facebook message from Gowans stating, “I’ll fix your tyre up before I go to work, sorry”.

Later that morning she found a piece of paper with Gowans’s phone number on her screen door.

The court heard witnesses saw Gowens in the victim’s carport kneeling by and touching the tyre of a vehicle - they told her and she found the vehicle with a flat tyre and the valve cap on the ground.

Then about 10pm that night Gowens was captured on CCTV aggressively banging on the victim’s front door before throwing items around the front porch.

Gowens admitted to police he had been to the victim’s home and had sent her messages but said he believed he had an ongoing joke with her and that they were friends.

The victim said she felt “extremely intimidated and threatened” and had moved away from the area, “too afraid” to return.

The court was told Gowens did not have a history of similar offending.

Magistrate Michelle Howard said why Gowens would engage in this type of behaviour was not clear to her as he seemed to be a law-abiding citizen but noted the behaviour was “concerning”.

Gowans pleaded guilty to stalking and was fined $1200. A restraining order was put in place and a conviction was not recorded.
