A man has avoided imprisonment despite a nine month crime spree that included stealing from a charity.

Bradley George Stevenson appeared in Proserpine Magistrates Court via video link pleading guilty to 35 offences.

The court heard Mr Stevenson had spent 51 days in pre-sentence custody with police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe saying his actions showed “a blatant disregard for the law and other people’s property”.

She said he endangered members of the community with his driving and he had drug issues that he failed to address.

Along with multiple charges for breaching bail conditions, possessing drugs and drug utensils, and various driving offences including drug driving, the court heard Mr Stevenson repeatedly entered the Whitsunday Community Service Centre, wandering around before stealing donated items including a speaker, a suitcase, and bag full of donations.

He also went to Supercheap Auto where he shoved items down his pants and walked out without paying.

The 34-year olds lawyer Phillip Moore from Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and Legal Service told the court Mr Stevenson was in a relationship that fell apart last year and had been dealing with some mental health issues.

“He’s had some time in custody to think about things,” he said.

He requested a community based order for Mr Stevenson but Magistrate Anna Smith said he had been given that opportunity twice before and done nothing.

“He doesn’t seem to take any interventions offered by community based order,” she said

Mr Stevenson was given a concurrent sentence of 6 months imprisonment with an immediate parole release date taking into account the time he had already served.

His existing probation was revoked and he was resentenced to 2 months imprisonment wholly suspended.

He was disqualified from holding a drivers licence for two years and six months.

A forfeiture order made in relation to the stolen property.

Convictions were recorded.
