A Bowen gym is leading the way in the latest health and wellness treatments, with the installation of a brand new infra-red sauna earlier this month.

Wes Bau’s gym on the corner of Richmond and West streets is the first gym in the Whitsundays to boast a cutting edge Chromotherapy sauna.

Mr Bau says it is well worth the trip to Bowen to experience the health benefits, which include pain relief, decreased muscle tension, improved circulation and more.

Health is a lifelong passion for Mr Bau and he has built a successful business from what was once a “hobby”, sharing his expertise as a personal trainer and Muay Thai boxing coach with the community.

His skills are so sought after, he was even able to buck the trend of many business during Covid-19, and relocate from his original “little shed” on Brisbane St to a bigger, better premises, and employ a junior staff member to help him expand his services to include massage, yoga, self defence and karate classes, in addition to his award-winning coaching.

The self made businessman hopes to grow his offering even further, with plans to incorporate therapies such as ice and magnesium baths, and eventually open more gyms throughout the Whitsundays.

“I’ve always wanted to provide the full package, and I’m imagining a future health retreat and training camp at Airlie Beach, something like what I’ve got in Bowen, but on acreage,” Mr Bau said.

He said there was a big demand for innovative wellness treatments in the Whitsunday region, which had only increased as Covid had reinforced the importance of healthy living for a lot of people.

Whatever their goals, Mr Bau was there to help anyone seeking to “improve their health and confidence”.

“It’s all about helping people live a healthier, happier life,” Mr Bau said.

“And it’s for everyone – not just fitness freaks.

“I welcome people who’ve never been to a gym, people who want to work out with their kids – everyone deserves a chance to live a better life,” he said.
