A fourth adult store could soon arrive in Airlie Beach with the public invited to have their say on a new development pegged for the heart of the tourist town.

Whitsundays-based Tanya Wade and Scott Conaghty, via their company Airlie Adult Shop and Luxury Lingerie, have applied to open an adult store on the second floor of a commercial building at 3/384 Shute Harbour Rd next to KC’s Bar and Grill.

Documents lodged to Whitsunday Regional Council state the operators sell adult products online with their proposed brick-and-mortar store to stock lingerie, attire for buck and bachelorette parties, and “adult wellness accessories for him and her”.

The plan is to display “party costumes and fun attire” towards the front of the store to separate the “exclusively adult section” at the rear.

The store can be accessed via a stairway from the Main St entrance or from the rear car park for those shoppers “wanting additional discretion” with proposed opening hours of 9am to 8pm Monday to Sunday.

The owners behind the proposed new Airlie Adult Shop and Luxury Lingerie store say their signage is less sexually 'explicit' than signs already used by neighbouring businesses, providing these photographs as evidence to the council. Picture: Documents lodged to Whitsunday Regional Council

Documents state a “security guard visits the premises at 9pm each night” and there are security cameras fitted throughout, with the store expected to create new jobs and increase foot traffic on Main St.

The application states any advertising will be “discrete and not explicitly sexual in nature” with proposed signage allegedly “less explicit” than those used by neighbouring businesses.

It further says the store aligns with the council’s planning scheme and the District Centre zoning.

The application is currently under the public notification period with residents able to make submissions up until August 2.
