A new self-service fuel station has been approved for the Bruce Highway in the Whitsundays that will cater for cars, light vehicles and B-double trucks up to 26m in length.

Crokers Fuels and Oils has the go ahead from Whitsunday Regional Council to build a servo on the vacant 10ha lot at 237 Bruce Highway in Proserpine, near the Whitsunday Palms Motel.

The council first gave approval for a service station with a shop and refreshment premises back in January 2018 but this newest application, which was lodged in late 2023, scales back the development to a “single, stand-alone station” with self-service bowsers.

Documents show there will be eight bays for cars and light vehicles and four lanes for trucks, plus six car park spaces “which are primarily intended to cater for occasional staff member visits to the site”.

The 18sq m fuel station will have “substantial landscaping” and a single entry and exit point from the highway.

“It is considered that the proposed development is compatible with the rural setting and will support rural enterprise and community wellbeing … the service station is located so that it does not adversely impact upon the amenity of existing or future planned residential areas,” the application states.

Documents further state the development will require bringing in about 1030 cubic metres of material for earthworks which will include widening of the highway.

Crokers Fuels and Oils, which is an authorised Ampol distributor, was established in Mackay by James Croker in 1889.

Its current directors including the Mackay-based David Hindle and Kevin Powell plus Margaret Gibson of Bracken Ridge and Glen Croker of Balgal Beach.

“ (Crokers) are a trusted supplier of bulk fuels, lubricants and vehicle cleaning solutions servicing a wide range of industries including farming, retail, transport, civil construction, and manufacturing in Mackay, Clermont, Proserpine and surrounding areas,” the company’s website states.
