The people have voted for their favourite seaside snack to find the best fish and chips shop in the Whitsundays, yet two stores have tied for a double crown.
Fellows Fish Shop in Bowen and West End Cash Store in Proserpine both received the same number of votes for the Whitsunday region’s best fish and chips.
Bird’s Fish Bar at Bowen Fisherman’s Seafood Co. came in second and Janack’s Seafood ranked in at a close third.
Fellows Fish Shop owner Lynda Fellows said the store had been operating since 1954.
“My husband and his family, right back to his grandfather, have been fishermen,” Ms Fellows said.
“They used to catch all their own fish and put it through the shop.
“It’s been going a long time (since husband Robert Fellows’) grandfather and father started it up.”
Ms Fellows said she and her husband had been running the shop for 19 years, seven days a week, with the Fish Shop only closing for Christmas Day.
She said winning the people’s choice vote meant “obviously we’re doing it right and putting out a good product”.
West End Cash Store owner John Haswell said it was “fantastic” to also win Whitsundays’ best fish and chips.
The store has been running for 30 years, providing quality local products at low prices to Proserpine residents and tourists alike.
“We always try to use a fresh local product and stay competitive price-wise, and provide a friendly service,” Mr Haswell said.
“We might be doing something right, hey.”
