Bowen is rallying behind a beloved mum of three after she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time.
Yvette Morgan has dedicated years of her life to helping children at Queens Beach State School, Merinda State School, Bowen State School, and Bowen State High School as a much loved teaching aide.
Seven years after her initial diagnosis with breast cancer, and two years after she was finally given an ‘all clear’, Yvette’s cancer has returned.
Aggressive stage four tumours were discovered in her spine, sternum, left ribs, lungs and lymph nodes in her chest on 17 January, and within 24 hours Yvette had been transported by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to the Gold Coast University Hospital to receive treatment and further testing.
Yvette’s husband Luke Morgan said he and Yvette would have to travel overseas to receive the necessary treatment, coming in at a huge cost to the family.
“Because this is Yvette’s second cancer diagnosis, we already know there will be limited treatment options for her here in Queensland,” said Luke.
“The treatment with the best chance is available at an overseas clinic, and our friend has set up a GoFundMe page so we can get Yvette there as quickly as possible.
“We are so grateful for anything our Bowen community can do to support us.”
The Hope4Cancer clinic in Mexico uses treatments that have the possibility to give even stage four cancer patients more time, in many cases, years beyond what doctors believe is possible, according to her friend Carla Adams who set up the GoFundMe.
The goal is to raise $50,000 to support the family and make travelling to Mexico to receive further treatment possible.
To show their support Merinda State School are holding a Musical Bingo Night fundraiser on Friday, 14 February, at McKenna Hall as well as a crazy sock day at the school which they are encouraging all the schools and childcare centres in Bowen to get involved with.
Donations can be made directly to the GoFundMe and tickets for the Musical Bingo Night can be purchased by calling 4785 2193 or emailing sgrov37@eq.edu.au
