Westfield Car parks at Carindale and Chermside face gridlock as Brisbane shoppers take cover

Heavy queues at shopping centres are being reported across Brisbane as people try and make the most of a miserable Saturday.

Heavy queues reported at Westfield Chermside and Westfield Carindale

Car parks at major shopping centres across Brisbane are at gridlock, with reports of shoppers taking close to two hours to exit car parks.

Heavy traffic queues were reported in the car parks of Westfield Chermside and Westfield Carindale on Saturday, as South East Queensland is drenched by rainfall, causing flash flooding and road closures.

Several customers reported lengthy times to get out of Westfield Carindale.

“2hrs 12 minutes carpark to exit. (I was parked rooftop),” Morgan Khan said.

“I’ve been 2 hours on the roof and moved maybe 30 metres,” Tom George said.

“I live a minute away and it was worse than Christmas today,” Chris Milo said.

“My partner said the boom gate was just too slow and it caused congestion with the high amount of traffic,” Amanda Fraser said.

Shoppers at Westfield Chermside also faced a lengthy wait to exit the car park.

“Do not go to Chermside, 1.5 hours stuck and still not even almost out,” one shopper said.

“Forget Westfield Chermside. It’s a car park. No one can get out,” Tammy Johnston said.

It is understood in a bid to alleviate the traffic, Westfield Chermside management moved the boom gates up and allowed free parking due to the congestion.

Westfield management have been contacted for comment.
