The state government is still working out who will quarantine at Toowoomba’s Wellcamp facility despite the centre coming online in a matter of weeks.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath on Thursday revealed various arrangements were still being worked through while saying the government wanted to use the centre to its full extent because “we know that it’s far safer than hotel quarantine”.
“I believe it’s due to come online by the end of this month,” she said.
“As far as I know it’s still on track.”
Five hundred beds will be operational by the end of the year with the remaining 500 to come online during the first quarter of 2022.
Ms D’Ath said whether the facility would be used in conjunction with hotel quarantine would depend on the volume of travellers that arrive.
“It will all depend on the capacity, the volume of people coming in and also we’re working through what cohort we want to put into Wellcamp,” she said.
“And we know that Wellcamp is a far better environment than our hotel quarantine because we know of the risk and especially when we get Omicron becoming the dominant strain, we’re seeing that transmission internationally again through corridors so the sooner we can get to Wellcamp the better.”
International students will quarantine in the facility from January.
