3.1 magnitude earthquake hits northern NSW

Warwick residents were left confused and amazed in a bizarre event that saw Queensland Police inundated with hundreds of calls.

Residents took to Facebook after reports of a loud sound followed by a tremor which left Warwick residents’ homes trembling.

However, the phenomena was not an explosion or earthquake like many who took to social media initially suspected.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the origin of the loud noise was a low-flying RAAF jet in the skies above Warwick, which may have broken the sound barrier.

“We would have gotten hundreds of calls around 7.30 pm, from people wondering if it was an earthquake, to people thinking the school had an explosion,” the spokesperson said.

Warwick residents were quick to express their confusion on social media, with one member of the community writing “did anyone else’s house shake like something hit it?”

The original post racked up 600 comments in less than an hour.

“I thought someone fell out of a plane and landed on my roof,” another commenter wrote.

“Sounded like a huge explosion out to the west from our place in Rosenthal Heights,” a resident said.

Residents in Leyburn also reported to feeling the effects of the jet, 60 km west.

Updates to come.
