Volunteers from rugby league and hockey to be recognised

THREE volunteers to be honoured at sports awards night.

VOLUNTEER AWARD: Three outstanding volunteers have been nominated for the Condamine Sports Club Volunteer of the Year award.

Trophies will be presented to each nominee and the overall winner.

The club which nominates the winner will receive a $500 cheque from the Condamine Sports Club.

This year's winner will be the sixth recognised for their volunteer work in Southern Downs sport. The winner will be named at Monday night's Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Sports Star of the Year dinner.

Nominees

Angela Groves/Warwick Hockey Association: She is a passionate, quiet, unassuming and humble volunteer who has contributed to the growth in hockey in Warwick in recent years.

She joined the association soon after moving to Warwick in 2004 and has been a club president, coached and managed teams before taking on the role of coaching co-ordinator in 2017.

Her first coaching role was the Warwick open ladies side in 2007 and for the past 12 months has facilitated a junior restructure.

She is passionate to ensure there is a competition for all ages in the association and is always looking at ways to bring hockey to families, schools and groups in the district. Groves runs primary and secondary school hockey competitions.

David O'Leary/Warwick Cowboys: Joined the Warwick Cowboys committee in 2010, vice president for five years and president from 2016 to 2018.

Coached Cowboys teams in 2013-2014 and now in his 10th year as part of the Warwick Cowboys committee.

He coached juniors at Collegians for eight years from 1998 and has coached the under-12 teams since the start of the 2018 season.

Club secretary for one year and Collegians vice president for the past 18 months.

Collegians referee's co-ordinator and in his fifth season as a referee at junior and senior level.

Glyn Rees/Wattles Rugby League: Current president of the Wattles club and past secretary for eight years.

He has been involved in rugby league in the region since 1992 when he was elected for the first of five terms as Warwick and District Junior Rugby League president.

Rees was president of South West division juniors for 14 years and secretary of the Toowoomba Rugby League for five years. He is a life member of four clubs/leagues/division in rugby league.

He was president of the Allora Cricket Club for five years after it was reformed in 2006, a member of the Allora Sports Club committee for a decade and part of the Allora Regional Sports Museum executive for the past two decades.
