RUGBY UNION: Volunteers are the backbone of every club and, without them, Saturday or Sunday games wouldn’t be possible.

There is always one standout helper who turns up early and gives their times without question.

For the Warwick Water Rats, Hayley Blyton is the standout.

“She has been around the club a really, really, really long time – she’s essentially the backbone of our club,” Water Rats secretary Tess Enchelmaier said.

“Hayley organises all of the bar and canteen, and anytime you ask for anyone to help out, she’s the first one there.”

Involved with club for more than 10 years, Blyton holds Water Rats life membership.

“Hayley is just so modest, she never asks for any praise or assistance,” she said.

“We’re such a small club and she’s always the first one to put up her hand to help.

“Often times we’ll have a barbecue and she’ll bring extra baked goods that we can hand out, without even being asked.”

While there are a number of volunteers involved with the Water Rats, Enchelmaier was adamant of the overwhelming impact Blyton has had.

“We would be so lost without her,” she said. “Her friendly and warm personality is something everyone notices when they come to the club.”

If there is a standout volunteer at your club, the Daily News would love to know.
