HOCKEY: The season has started early for players at the Warwick Hockey Association, with the start of the Summer 9s competition on Tuesday night.

It’s the first time the club has hosted its summer tournament in January, which participation director Angela Groves said was already paying off.

“On Tuesday night we had six teams enter to play and I think we had over 65 people down at the courts,” Groves said. “It’s a different format to the programs that we’ve run before too – the games are full field but a bit shorter and there’s only nine players a side.”

Senior players weren’t the only ones who took to the turf, with a junior competition run prior to the seniors.

“With the juniors, we’re running it so they can just turn up and play without registering,” she said.

“Most of them have parents playing in the senior competition so it made sense.”

Aside from the social benefits of the tournament, Groves said the competition would heat up each week.

“All of the teams have competitive players in them,” she said

“Every team has at least one or two new players in them, which is what we want.

“The competition is really starting the year in a positive way.”
