ONE season in the National Rodeo Association’s open competition, and breakaway roper Tahnee Small has made a clean sweep.

The 19-year-old was named the Warwick Credit Union/Daily News November senior sports star after winning the rookie title as well as the Western Buckle series title for breakaway roping.

“I had a goal at the start of the year to be the first breakaway roper to win the rookie and the title, so it was pretty cool to achieve that,” Small said.

“I already had the title won before I went into the finals because I had accumulated so many points during the year, but it was an awesome achievement.”

Small is no stranger to the rodeo circuit, with her mum and three brothers regularly competing.

“Mum was leading the Western Buckle series, and they actually added another rodeo in and I went around her – so a bit of competition during the year,” she said.

The award was one Small wasn’t expecting despite a convincing year on the circuit.

“It is pretty cool, I was pretty shocked actually,” she said.

“I’m going to do the same circuit again and I want to work hard and try and back it up again.”
