IT WAS a slow start for punters at Warwick's annual Boxing Day races.

This year's Hawaiian theme ensred there was as much entertainment off the track as there was on.

Warwick Turf Club president Phil Grant said this year's addition of a mechanical surfboard and beach volleyball competition was well recieved.

"People seem excited for that to be there,” he said.

"It's something a little bit different for us having a themed race day but so far it has gone well.”

While some donned traditional race day attire, others felt more at home in leis and thongs bringing the beach to the bush.
