Emergency services were called to a public toilet at Leslie Park on the corner of Guy and Albert streets just before 11am on Tuesday, after an unknown cylinder was located nearby.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said crews established an exclusion zone in the area while they liaised with their scientific team, as well as police and paramedics to determine whether there was any potential threat.

The QFES spokesman said nothing of concern was located inside the cylinder, and police, paramedics and fire crews were stood down with no immediate threat to the area.

The incident was left in the hands of Southern Downs Regional Council representatives to dispose of the cylinder.

It is unclear how the cylinder got there or what was contained inside.

A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesman said council was quick to take action and ensure public safety.

“The specific toilet was immediately secured from public access as soon as council staff were aware of the incident,” the spokesman said. “The toilet block will remain locked until the clean-up is completed and the necessary repairs are undertaken to the vandalised public facility.”
