'Great Southern Nights' reviving music industry with 200 gigs

After Covid wiped out live entertainment and musicians were hit with devastating gig cancellations, one band got working on a way to bring the Warwick live music scene back to life.

Homegrown talents Sleeping Dogs have generated a strong following since forming and were devastated when booked gigs were shelved and their next opportunity to take to the stage was shrouded in uncertainty.

Singer Jonno Colfs said he and his bandmates decided to take matters into their own hands and bring something new to town.

“We thought, "why don't we put our own event on?" And here we are,” he said.

“We have the combined skills and know-how to be able to put this together, as well as some very supportive local organisations to help us make it happen.

“Being in the industry already, we were halfway there, with a lot of the gear needed to put on a good show, a great untapped venue and a community crying out for something cool to do.”

Colfs said the Live at the Factory event would be family-friendly, with free jumping castles for the kids and delicious foods and drinks to enjoy while jamming to some local talents.

“We live to play live so this will be us in our element, no doubt about it, and we've put together a hell of a show for the Live At The Factory crowd,” he said.

“It's also a chance to see the old butter factory like you've never seen it before, it'll be lit up and looking awesome.”

The band brought on local vendors for the event, with food and drinks on offer from 4Stagioni Mobile pizza, JoJo’s Brewhouse, a local burger stand, the Nice Cream van and Mexican food from Upwey Eats.

Granite Belt wines will be on offer in the bar, along with the usual favourites.

Sleeping Dogs will take to the stage after fellow Warwick musos The 78 Sound, made up of Warwick crowd pleasers and brothers Clayton, Ben and Morgan Vellacott, and newbies Eunoia.

Colfs said he was eager to see Eunoia make their debut performance after a chance meeting with the newly-formed band.
“We'd just finished a Jumpers and Jazz gig, were unloading our gear and heard some nice voices jamming down at the Butterworth Arms courtyard,” he said.

“We went down and had a listen and when the idea for this event came up we approached them, so they formed a band and this is their first gig.”

Live at the Factory runs from 3pm to 10pm Saturday, with gates open from 2.30pm.

Tickets are $20 for adults and kids under 14 are free. Buy online here or at the door.
