ICE and marijuana were allegedly uncovered in a vehicle during a major road blitz on the New England Highway that ended with four drivers being charged and 35 fines dished out.

Heavy vehicles were a main target of the blitz, but police commended truckies after only a few minor issues were detected.

Wallangarra Police Sergeant Alan Baker said general road users were the main offenders when it came to fines and charges issued.

Operation Quebec Felix was undertaken on the highway between Stanthorpe and the New South Wales border by the Wallangarra Police, Department of Transport and Main Roads inspectors and Stanthorpe Road Policing Unit and general duties officers from July 23-31.

Four people were charged with drug driving, with two of those raking up seven drug charges between them, including possessing dangerous drugs.

They were reportedly in possession of ice and marijuana.

Four drivers were also charged with driving with a suspended and disqualified licence.

Police also issued 35 fines , mainly for speeding.

Sgt Baker said transport inspectors also issued three fines and four defect notices.

Offenders were largely drivers passing through the area rather than local motorists, Sgt Baker said.

A total of 29 heavy vehicles were intercepted over the period as transport inspectors reportedly checked log books and inspected loads using tape measures.

But Sgt Baker said no truckies were caught drug driving and very few problems were detected.

"It was heartening to see that the overwhelming majority were in full compliance, just a couple of issues with log books and defects,” Sgt Baker said.

Sgt Baker said police would continue to enforce traffic laws on the highway.

"Obey the speed limit, do not use illicit drugs and you'll arrive safely at your destination,” Sgt Baker said.
