Racing enthusiasts will gather for a high-octane weekend of burning rubber, vintage cars and vans at Leyburn this weekend for the renowned Southern Downs annual historical motorsport event.
History is set to be made at Saturday’s Mike and Ann Collins Memorial Junior Trophy contest with the youngest entrant set to make their motor racing debut at just 14 years of age.
Historic Leyburn Sprints committee president Tricia Chant said this year’s junior contest will see nine entrants aged between 14-17 compete, marking the most number of junior entrants ever recorded.
“The junior’s competition is based off regularity, with the entrants electing a time to match with the driver losing the least time points taking the win,” she said.
Inheriting the family motor racing gene, Tricia has been competing for 25 years and will again appear on the track this weekend in her all-time favourite race car, a 1968 Ford Mustang.
“This year we have a lot of old cars featuring with 40 new vehicles competing this year,” she said.
“(The event) is really going back to its grassroots this year and there will be a lot of old cars there that people might never have seen before and likely won’t ever see again.”
Despite the unfavourable weather prediction for the Southern Downs this weekend, Mrs Chant said the event is still sure to have an excellent turn out.
The two-day event will kickstart on Saturday, August 19 featuring over 222 vintage and modern vehicles, followed by an array of events on Sunday, including the annual vintage vans, Shannon’s show ‘n’ shine and much more.
