Chance encounter sets Warwick mum Sophie Spencer on path to create world-changing podcast Big Things Little Things

A Warwick woman has taken her own fear at climate inaction and transformed it into a new venture designed to unite the community and reduce our footprint. Here’s how you can be involved.

Australians want more climate action but 'the devil is in the detail'

A Warwick mum says it was a chance encounter in her everyday routine that sparked her passion for the environment and led to her kickstarting her own podcast.

Sophie Spencer was listening to one of her favourite podcasts when an author was being interviewed about their book on climate change.

She said it was this podcast episode that changed her life, as she would go on to research the topic and come to find a new point of view about what she says “really matters” in society.

“I’m scared about the future and living the reality of the climate crisis and the government aren’t doing anything so the people have to do it,” she said.

To play her part in climate change activism, Mrs Spencer has started her own podcast called Big Things Little Things, which delves into the serious environmental concerns plaguing Australia.

“I’m so passionate about it that I’m putting myself out there. This is embarrassing but so important to me that I do everything I can to stop it,” she said.

“I’m no one special, just extremely worried. I personally am extremely frightened for the future – when it comes to this, in our lifetime we are extremely vulnerable, I have a direct stake and want to make a positive difference.”

Mrs Spencer hopes to offer people ways to engage in environmentally positive action by interviewing experts in the field such as Hannah Moloney from Gardening Australia.

Climate change is such a big issue and people don’t know how to translate this massive problem into small solutions,” she said.

“I want to plant the seeds for change in people’s mind to give them small solutions that they can achieve in day to day life and big initiatives they could engage in.

“Educating people on the ways and things they can do will lead to a better, environmentally friendly future.”

Mrs Spencer said she was doing the podcast to give comfort to people who, like her, are worried about climate change.

“I love podcasts, it’s like modern day radio, it’s a really personal way to engage with people, and have a deep conversation,” she said.

Mrs Spencer’s podcast Big Things Little Things is available to listen to for free on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
