A new Assumption College facility with hi-tech and virtual devices will be built this year to better engage students in learning.

Principal Simon Fleming said the decision to create a new learning centre stemmed from the school’s need for more technological-advanced facilities.

“What we’re doing is broadening the scope so students can engage in their learning and technology, because at the moment those sort of facilities don’t exist, the ability to play with that technology themselves and usefulness of it has the potential to open doors for our kids,” he said.

The new learning facility will feature a media centre, study areas, conference rooms, an IT department and a new and improved library.

“The media centre will give students access to all types of technology they can use through media, hands-free and the virtual world. That was the main scope, integrated with work with STEM and conference rooms which will enable more collaboration than can currently exist,” Mr Fleming said.

The e-learning and contemporary digital technologies will give the school 21st century capabilities.

The existing library will be turned into a STEM centre and another science lab to broaden the scope of student learning.

Mr Fleming said the development upgrade was part of the school’s long-term plan to accommodate the school’s population growth.

“We decided that it‘s in the best interest of the school and community to build another one that will cater for current and future students,” he said.

“We have completely outgrown our existing library and we’re in urgent need of an update and expansion to improve the whole facility.

“Currently we can have 40 to 50 students (in the library) that makes it full to brim, just the extra space will enable us to carry out different classes at different times, seniors can be using for study while other classes are there too.”

Mr Fleming hopes the facility, which will begin getting built in December, will be completed by the middle of next year.
