A man has been refused bail after racking up a string of charges, including attempting to escape from custody.

Alexander Jordan Weir faces 15 charges ranging from obstructing a police officer, serious assault of a police officer, as well as threatening violence and escaping lawful custody.

Facing Warwick Magistrates Court on Monday, Mr Weir did not appear, nor had a lawyer present on his behalf, and it was up to a defence lawyer to act as friend of the court to relay his message that he was making an application for bail.

The court was told the man was involved in an alleged altercation with an elderly neighbour, ending up with a serious assault charge, and later attempted to flee custody while in a police vehicle after he was taken into custody last week.

Police prosecutor Andrew Grafton labelled Mr Weir as a “danger to the community and the police” and submitted that bail be denied due to an ongoing risk of Mr Weir committing further offences and putting the community at risk.

Hamish Chapman, acting as friend of the court, said there were many risks regarding Mr Weir’s release on bail regarding the escape from lawful custody charge.

Mr Chapman relayed Mr Weir’s explanation regarding the alleged offending, saying that he had been suffering both mental and physical issues including a lung condition, which he is awaiting a diagnosis for, as well as PTSD which means “he doesn’t do well in closed spaces”.

“While he was in the back of the (police) vehicle, he found a button and wasn’t sure what it was for, and pressed it, causing the window down to put his torso out the window for fresh air,” Mr Chapman said.

Magistrate Andrew Cridland ordered that bail is refused for Mr Weir as he would be a “simply unacceptable risk” to the community while on bail.

He will appear again on June 19 via videolink.
