A fire investigation will begin today following a blaze in a unit block at Noosa Heads.

Five crews, including an aerial unit, were called to the Department of Housing unit in Wyandra St just before 8pm after a smoke alarm went off and flames were reported billowing from the windows.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said investigators would travel to the site of the blaze later this morning.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the fire was being treated as non-suspicious at this stage.

Last night, the entire unit block was evacuated, and residents of six units were being placed into emergency accommodation on Monday night due to the effects of water and smoke.

Initial investigations suggest one unit has been completely gutted by fire and four other units have been affected by smoke.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were quick to extinguish the fire, which broke out on the top storey of the three-level building.

A QFES spokeswoman said the first crew arrived within seven minutes of the triple-0 call. The fire was initially reported as a smoke alarm before a second emergency call was made a few minutes later.
