Two men have died and another six have been injured after two trucks crashed and rolled overnight, closing a major highway southwest of Brisbane.
The crash happened about 2.20am in Tregony near Warwick in the Southern Downs, when two trucks travelling in opposite directions along the Cunningham Highway crashed, and rolled.
A 45-year-old man who was one of the drivers, and a 30-year-old man who was a passenger tragically died, local police confirmed.
Initial reports indicate that one of the vehicles veered into the other lane, causing a collision.
A Isuzu FTR and a prime mover have been identified as the two vehicles in the crash.
It is understood the Forensic Crash Unit is still on the scene as of 1pm Thursday.
“The driver and a passenger in one of the truck’s died at the scene,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.
“Six other people sustained minor injuries,” he said.
Six stable patients with minor injuries were transported by road ambulances to hospital, including four to Ipswich Hospital and two to Warwick Hospital.
“It is expected to be shut for several hours while emergency services clear the scene, the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstance of the crash,” the spokesman said.
The tragic incident saw five fire and rescue crews called to the scene.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said crews arrived to find one of the vehicles blocking the highway.
It’s understood a truck with a semi-trailer and a body truck were involved and had collided near the Mt Mitchell walking trail on the Cunningham Highway.
The QFD spokeswoman said firefighters had assisted paramedics in accessing two patients.
One crew remained on scene of the crash as they work to remove the vehicle from the highway.
The highway remains closed in both directions and motorists are advised to expect long delays.
All heavy and light vehicles are turned around at closure points westbound at Lake Moogerah Road and eastbound at the Fisher Park Truck Stop.
The crash sparked has calls for the upgrade of the highway and a greater police presence to target speeding and tailgating drivers.
“Traffic has increased and roads are not to standards. Some highway are slower then school zone in peak times, people lose it and accidents will increase,’’ Michael Podesta said.
But others said impatient drivers were often to blame.
“Driving from Toowoomba to Warwick yesterday about 2pm we were passed by multiple cars/vans who overtook several cars at a time,’’ Rosie Miners said.
“Two lots were almost tailgating.’’
“I took photos of number plates but no use going to police as these vehicles were on dotted lines.
“All cars (and) semis being overtaken were doing 100 speed limit.
“There needs to be more police presence or mobile speed cameras from Warwick to Toowoomba. This excessive speeding is a common occurrence any time of day.”
The double fatality near Warwick follows another collision between two trucks at Rockhampton which claimed the life of a driver.
A Kenworth truck and a white and blue Kenworth truck collided near the Kabra rail crossing.
Photos show tyre marks from one of the trucks crossing the double white lines of the highway.
The driver and sole occupant of the green Kenworth truck, a 60-year-old man died at the scene.
The Cunningham Highway was reopened as of 10.17pm Thursday.
