Brisbane will not have a casino open for three days, ahead of the opening of The Star Brisbane in the multibillion-dollar Queen’s Wharf precinct next week.

After 29 years of operation, the Treasury Casino will close to the public at midnight on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

Since opening its doors in April 1995, Brisbane’s only 24-hour casino has rarely stood still, providing entertainment for punters and visitors within its iconic heritage buildings.

The planned closure of the Treasury Casino comes ahead of the staged opening of Queens Wharf precinct, which features the new The Star Brisbane casino, on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

It means that Brisbane won’t have a casino for three days.

The date of the planned Treasury Casino closure was made public in an ASX announcement released by the Star Entertainment Group Limited on Thursday.

“The Star Entertainment Group Limited (ASX: SGR) (The Star) provides the following update ahead of the staged opening of Queens Wharf Brisbane (QWB) on Thursday August 29 2024,” the statement read.

“The Star has been advised by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation of their approval pursuant to section 61(4) of the Casino Control Act 1982 (Qld), to close The Treasury Brisbane Casino (Treasury Casino) to the public at midnight, Sunday August 25, 2024.

“Closing the Treasury Casino on this date is part of final preparations ahead of the planned staged opening of QWB, subject to final regulatory approvals.”

While the Treasury Casino will close on Sunday, the Treasury Hotel will remain open and provide extra accommodation while hotels are under construction in the Queen’s Wharf precinct.

Once the new hotels in the precinct are completed and open, the heritage-listed Treasury Hotel building is set to be restored and will re-open as a new heritage hotel.

The first stage opening of the Queen’s Wharf precinct will see a range of restaurants, bars, cafes, accommodation options, entertainment experiences, public spaces open, as well as the new casino.

The Star Brisbane chief executive Daniel Finch said the closure of the Treasury Casino is “a very important part of history for this city”.

“The Treasury Casino will be closing this coming Sunday at the strike of midnight,” Mr Finch said.

“That’s a very important part of history for this city, it’s a moment where we’ll be looking at transferring some of those memories.

“It’s an emotional one for us after we’ve been the caretaker of that building.

“It’s also an exciting time as we are on the eve of launching and opening a magnificent precinct.”
