Poker tables were deserted at The Star Brisbane casino on Wednesday night as members of the United Workers Union took strike action for better conditions.
A crowd gathered in front of Queens Wharf for the second Star Entertainment protest organised by the union.
A speaker called for the better pay rates of the Star Brisbane staff.
“Sunday rates are not good enough. So thank you for coming out to protest these Sunday rates,” he said.
The protest is understood to comprise of gaming floor staff alongside workers from Star-owned restaurants and housekeeping.
Union delegate Marcia Conlan said the protest is to retain Sunday rates which were planned to be cut by Star Entertainment group.
“We have a lot of members saying, ‘if this goes ahead, they won’t be able to hold rent and they won’t be able to feed their families’,” they said.
“Throughout the entire negotiations, the workers have been very reasonable from the start.
“But when it comes to Sunday rates, we’re not going backwards.”
Protests are planned to continue, with the next strike scheduled for Friday.
