Teen dies in horror accident celebrating new Gold Coast home

An 18-year-old man who died after hitting his head while doing a backflip was celebrating moving into a new apartment at the Gold Coast, his family has revealed.

An 18-year-old man who died after hitting his head while doing a backflip was celebrating moving into a new apartment at the Gold Coast, his family has revealed.

Sonny John Orlando Blundell was found unresponsive by his housemate on Tuesday, June 24 after doing a backflip and hitting his head in the lounge room.

He was put into a coma at the hospital and suffered several strokes that night before having brain surgery but succumbed to his injuries on June 30.

His sister Izabella Cromack-Hay told this masthead Mr Blundell was about to start his new life, having just moved to Southport from the Central Coast in New South Wales.

“He moved to Queensland to start a new life with his girlfriend. and had got offered a concreting position on the new lightrail,” she said.

“Sonny had an extraordinary lifestyle, he lived his short 18 years of life to the fullest of his ability.

“Moving to Queensland only a month ago, which was his greatest accomplishment, he worked the hardest concreting and making himself known.”

Ms Cromack-Hay said he was the biggest Bulldogs fan from the day he could watch the footy.

“Sonny touched everyone’s soul so deeply, he was the kindest, loving and nurturing man you could have met,” she said.

“His laugh and smile would light up a room in seconds. From the day he was born he would always keep mum on her toes.

“Sonny will forever be missed and forever loved by all.”

She said he loved his family and friends.

“We have all been an extremely close family. Sonny was extremely close with mum and had a bond with her like no other,” she said.

“My favourite memory would be when we were young we use to ride around on the cruiser bikes.

“I would be on the front and he would be sitting on the back of the bike.”

Ms Cromack-Hay said she had facetimed him the day he hit his head.

“He was celebrating moving into the Meriton on Southport beach with his best friend Mitchell Bullard when he did a backflip and hit his head,” she said.

“He hit his head in the lounge room on the ground and had a headache went to bed, woke up went to the toilet vomiting and then passed out that’s when his best friend found him unresponsive in the morning.”

A GoFundMe has so far raised more than $20,000 to help the family with funeral costs and to bring him back to New South Wales.
