A new eco-retreat with eight cabins and a yoga space has been proposed for the Sunshine Coast hinterland for visitors interested in nature and conservation.

The application made by Lee Development Planning on behalf of Restful Ridges Pty Ltd shows the retreat would be built on a rural-zoned block at Delicia Rd, Obi Obi, near Mapleton.

The nature-based accommodation project, subject to Sunshine Coast Regional Council approval, would also include education on native wildlife.

“The eight proposed cabins will provide accommodation for people focused on conservation, interpretation and appreciation of areas of natural environmental value,” the application said.

“This includes walkers to Gheerulla Falls and other visitors at the Mapleton National Park, which is directly opposite the subject site.

“Each cabin will include an interpretative pamphlet and QR link, containing information about the local wildlife.

“This information will highlight the spectacular birdlife evident within the subject site, as well as provide awareness material for the local echidna.”

The plans show eight cabins in various designs, each self-contained with car spaces, as well as a common building featuring a designated yoga space.

Elevated cabins are supported by “rough tree trunk columns”, with a focus on privacy and seclusion.

The retreat will be designed to be off-grid, serviced entirely by rainwater and powered by solar panels.

According to property records 563A Delicia Rd, Obi Obi, was sold in April, 2022 for $1.8m to Restful Ridges Pty Ltd.

Julia Tyack is listed as the developer of the company.

If approved it would join a growing number of eco-tourism retreats such as Habitat Noosa on the Noosa River and Kondalilla Eco Resort.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said nature-based tourism was a booming business in the Sunshine Coast, as more retreats and resorts take advantage of the surrounding natural environment.

“Following the pandemic, extensive research highlights travellers’ desires for nature-based experiences – something the Sunshine Coast offers in spades,” Mr Stoeckel said.

“Tourism Australia research indicates 48 per cent of travellers are interested in natural landmarks and wonders and 41 per cent want to explore wilderness / nature.

“The Sunshine Coast’s natural attractions provide an opportunity for visitors to reconnect with nature.”
