Sunshine Coast Covid: 76 cases recorded in past 24 hours

Covid numbers continue to rise on the Sunshine Coast with venues taking to social media to announce closures due to close contacts.

One of the Sunshine Coast biggest retail stores has closed its doors temporarily as positive recorded Covid cases continue to climb to more than 500.

Queensland Health has recorded a rise of 76 cases on the Sunshine Coast in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 546.

There are currently 136 active cases in the region, with 132 now fully recovered.

JBHI-FI at Sunshine Plaza has been the latest Coast business to close its doors as a precaution while case numbers continue to rise.

In a statement to customers on Tuesday, the popular store said “due to Covid and as a precautionary measure the store will be closed until further notice”.

Store management has been contacted to confirm whether the store will be deep cleaned.

It is understood JB HI-FI shut its doors about midday on Tuesday.

It comes as Noosaville restaurant Sum Yung Guys’ owner Matt Sinclair took to Instagram to announce his restaurant’s closure before Christmas after 25 staff members were tested for Covid.

Queensland recorded 1158 cases across the state as pop-up testing sites open in areas such as Noosaville to take pressure off of the region’s health services.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath announced on Tuesday Queenslanders would not be required to undertake a day five Covid test.

In regards to the change in testing requirements, Ms D’Ath said the PCR rule was picking up less than one in 10 positive cases.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard revealed 0.6 per cent of people who had gotten a day 5 test had tested positive.

Ms D’Ath said this brings the number of active cases across Queensland to 4779, with 257 Omicron infections being reported.

She said 26 LGAs, including the Sunshine Coast, had recorded positive cases in the last 24 hours.

More than 32,000 tests have been conducted since Monday with the Queensland Ambulance Service opening a new testing centre in Noosaville to ease numbers.

Located at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Wallace Dr, the pop-up clinic requires no GP referral with testing for children also available.

Queensland Health were reporting on Tuesday wait times were between 1-2 hours at the new Noosa testing site.

Noosa residents were observed on Monday to be queuing for Covid tests for three hours in the rain at the testing clinic on Hastings Street.

Restaurants on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa have started to take it upon themselves to tell customers about shop closures due to close contacts.

Boardwalk Bistro on Hastings announced on Facebook on Monday they would be closed until at least the weekend due to Covid.

Queensland Health hasn’t listed any new exposure sites listed for the Sunshine Coast and Noosa regions since Saturday, when six different locations for casual contact were recorded.

Dr Gerrard wanted to remind those who received positive Covid texts to only head to the emergency departments if they had significant symptoms such as breathlessness and chest pain.

New South Wales has today recorded 6062 new cases and numbers have spiked to 2738 in Victoria.
