Swans crowned one-day champions

Maroochydore has defended its one-day title with a comprehensive win over Caboolture at Grant Road to claim its 11th limited overs final in a one-sided contest.

Snakes’ captain Matt Schubert won the toss and elected to bat, but came up against an attack spearheaded by Matt Jackson, who opened the bowling with Callum Stitt.

Opener Zac Martin, coming off an unbeaten 136 against Caloundra the day before, didn’t survive Stitt’s first over, then Luke Ryan was Jackson’s first wicket at 20, bringing Schubert to the crease to become the next victim at 3/24.

Connor Corlet and Clayton Simpson settled in to steady the Snakes’ progress, eking out 15 runs from 63 balls before Luke McInnes found Simpson’s stumps, only to find himself bowling to Clayton’s son, Carter, who made 11 before suffering the same fate.

Now 5/64, Caboolture were again presented with a fired-up Jackson, and his last three overs all brought wickets, with two in the second.

The Snakes lost 5/6 as the innings collapsed for 70, with Jackson’s 6/21 both his personal best

and the Division 1 best in a one-day final.

The Swans chase was no stroll in the park after Callum Stitt was bowled second ball, until Reid Anderson hit 25 from 22 deliveries to give some momentum.

Captain Blaine Schloss stepped in to provide his usual stability, accumulating 22 from 71 faced while Jack Connew, 3/11 off 8 overs, probed the middle order.

But defending 70 is hard yakka, and the end came off the 29th over as Schloss, at 7/70, nudged the winning run from Jaxon Eyles to defend the Swans’ OD title.

This was the club’s fourth victory on the day after playing in all six division OD finals.
