Three time Group 1 winning trainer Paul Jenkins says the 2022/23 racing season is “travelling as expected” for his Caloundra stable of 32 horses.

Jenkins, who relocated to the Sunshine Coast from New Zealand in 2012, trained King Keirel to the 2001 Doomben Cup and Bazelle to the 2005 Auckland Cup while his brother Brian trained Jezabeel to the 1998 Melbourne Cup.

He holds a 16.16 per cent win rate and a 35.35 per cent place rate at the Sunshine Coast, 15.4 and 38.5 per cent at Doomben and 10 and 10 at Eagle Farm this season.

“Adrenaline thoroughbreds keep finding us some new horses which really help and we’re looking for some new boxes too which once the new ones are built would help us a fair bit,” Jenkins said.

He said Prickly Poppy, who is set to run at Eagle Farm in race eight on Wednesday, January 3, was a winning hope.

“She should’ve won before now but hasn’t had much luck so she should be a big chance on Wednesday,” he said.

“She always lumps a fair bit of weight for a little mare which doesn’t help her much but will win again soon and she’ll be a handy horse from the Autumn on I think.”

Star mare Renouf also returned to the races in December with two races in Brisbane and looks roaring to go with a current record of two wins and three placings from seven starts when third up.

“The run on Saturday I was pleased with as she was on the inside of the track where I don’t think they were running as well compared to those two or three horses off the fence,” he said.

“Once she got out there she hit the line really hard and finished two to three lengths off the winner in a race that had a pretty slick time.

“I’m hoping to try and have her in one of the Sunshine Coast metropolitan races and snag a little bit of black type with her.”

Jenkins said youngsters Miss Bacall and Lady Le Da were also ones to watch.

“A filly called Miss Bacall is one I think a lot of even though she’s unraced and Lady Le Da is a smart filly that could be a nice staying three-year-old in the winter,” he said.

“Tairua is not far away, she’s come up good as well.”
