Wavell SHS were able to silence their critics in round five thanks to a 20-10 victory steered by halfback Zac Herdegen against a competitive Caloundra SHS outfit.

A change of venue meant Caloundra were ready to impress under the beaming lights and a healthy grandstand at the Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Both teams started with plenty of energy before Caloundra livewire fullback Ellyjah Birve weaved through the defence to link up with Tyler Conquest who dived out to score against the corner pole.

Conquest showed his speed minutes later down the left hand touchline before Wavell hit back through a lovely kick over the top from halfback Zac Herdegen bounced perfectly for left winger Kurt Jones to score in the corner to level the scores.

Wavell continued to build pressure on the home side, pinning them in their own half before left centre Carlos Ka went over thanks to a lovely cut out ball from Herdegen.

Caloundra were again not able to get their hands on the footy, leading to increased defensive pressure and eventually another Wavell try from lock forward. Charlie Dickson.

The teams resumed the second half with the scores 14-4 in favour of Wavell SHS before Caloundra prop forward Darcel Snowden shoved off multiple defenders to run 45m, only to be brought down metres from the line.

Caloundra failed to capitalise on their chance which eventually led to Wavell scoring another try after a deflected grubber kick landed back in the hands of fullback Sangstar Figota.

The Wavell and Caloundra crowd continued to get involved from the sidelines and after a great back and forth final quarter, Caloundra’s Ellyjah Birve crossed for a consolation try to shorten the gap.

The referee eventually called full time on the contest with a Wavell taking the spoils 20-10.

WALTERS CUP

Wavell SHS launched out of the starting blocks against Stretton College and never looked like slowing down as they ran away with a dominant 64-6 win in round four.

Wavell started fast and with plenty of power as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

The visiting side were on the back foot and despite their best efforts, Wavell were able to punch through on two more occasions before halftime.

The match resumed with Wavell leading 26-0 as they extended the gap to 38 before Stretton crossed for their first try of the afternoon.

Stretton’s try wasn’t enough to change momentum with Wavell scoring a further five tries before the referee called full time.

While both sides sit sixth and seventh respectively, their results and records haven't painted a true picture of their on-field performances.

Caloundra are yet to record a win this season while Wavell secured their first ladder points with a 24-12 victory against Marsden in round two.

Caloundra head coach Toby Poole said his side were looking forward to playing their remaining three matches at home.

“It’s pretty exciting as I know the boys are chomping at the bit to finally get a chance to play in front of their families, friends and past students that come to watch,” he said.

“We usually get a fair turn out which the boys are pumped for and our year sevens are playing before us as well which should be good.”

The Seahawks would be without star Queensland Schoolboys recruit Cooper Clarke for the remainder of the season after requiring ankle surgery.

“It’s a huge blow,” Poole said.

“It’s devastating for us as a team but obviously far more for Cooper as an individual so we’re just ensuring we’re getting around him and making sure he’s doing okay mentally.”

Caloundra would look to welcome back captain Zac Garton in the hopes of continuing his elite schoolboy form.

“I just hope we can compete and complete our sets as usual which remain the big focus for us,” Poole said.

“Wavell won’t make it easy for us, their team is a lot stronger than their results have suggested as they are well coached, well drilled and have a strong middle.

“Hopefully Zac is all okay from schoolboy state champs so he’ll be a big in for us but at the same time it’s disappointing we weren’t able to have a proper game with him and Cooper together.”
