The top five jockeys for the 2021/2022 racing season include Ryan Maloney, Justin Huxtable, Robbie Fradd, James Orman and Ben Thompson.

The 2021/2022 horse racing season is now underway and there are plenty of top jockeys putting their best foot forward at each Sunshine Coast meet.

Jockey Ben Thompson was recently crowned the winner of the jockeys premiership for his performances last season and is looking to go back to back against an even stronger competition.

The Daily has taken a look at which standout jockeys you should keep an eye out for to help bring home the big bucks this racing season.

Ryan Maloney

After making the move from Victoria to Queensland in 2018, Maloney has not looked back and has become a Group 1 winning jockey on Sunshine Coast bred and one of Australia’s favourites, Alligator Blood.

In the past 12 months Maloney has had the best win and place percentage of any jockey at the Sunshine Coast track.

The gifted jockey has been able to move up the Queensland Racing Metropolitan Jockeys table each year.

He narrowly missed out on a top three spot in 2018/19 before finishing third in the 2019/20 season and being crowned the winner last season.

At the current rate there is no reason to steer away from Maloney again this season as he is quickly becoming a Queensland and Sunshine Coast favourite.

Ben Thompson

<font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;">Ben Thompson returns to scale on Al Passem after winning race 7, Keno Replay Handicap, during Caulfield Race Day at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Saturday, June 30, 2018. At 24 years of age Thompson has already proven himself as one of the top jockeys since relocating to Queensland.

After taking out the Sunshine Coast jockeys premiership for the 2020/2021 season he will no doubt look to build on what already is a remarkable start to his career.

Thompson had the most starts at the Sunshine Coast track ahead of any other jockey last season and was able to make a strong case for himself against an elite competition.

Thompson’s hot start has been halted as he was recently suspended for four months after being found guilty on two charges relating to an investigation that was opened in May 2020 in regards to his win on ‘No Frontiers’.

No doubt Thompson is eager to get back to the track as soon as possible and apply those winning traits he showed last season all over again.

Justin Huxtable

<font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;">Jockey Justin Huxtable rode the Chris Munce-trained Degas to victory in the Maiden Plate (1400m) at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Friday, May 8, 2020. Young gun Justin Huxtable is continuing to throw his name into the ring as one of Queensland’s top jockeys.

The 21 year-old jockey was able to take out the metropolitan apprentice premiership last season, finishing 14 wins ahead of second placed Leah Kilner.

With some big rides and even bigger wins to his name already, Huxtable is continuing to blossom under superstar trainer Chris Munce.

Huxtable is definitely one jockey to keep your eyes on this season.

Robbie Fradd

<font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;">Jockey Robbie Fradd reacts after riding Impasse to victory in Race 6, the Queensland Chinese Jockey Club Benchmark 85 Handicap during the Lunar New Year Race Day at Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, Saturday, February 1, 2020. Robbie Fradd is a tried and tested Group One winning jockey with stints in South Africa, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and now Australia.

The 56-year-old jockey is a leading performer among the Queensland jockeys dressing rooms, having cracked more than 95 wins four times in the past five seasons.

Although being based on the Gold Coast, Fradd travelled to Corbould Park for 138 rides in the last 12 months for 26 wins and 35 placings.

An old head in the jockeys room but Fradd is definitely another name to continue to highlight when perusing the form guide this season.

James Orman

<font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;"><font style="vertical-align: inherit;">Jockey James Orman returns to scale after riding Ballistic Boy to victory in race 9, the QTIS 3YO Handicap, at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane, Saturday, March 7, 2020. Orman has been able to acquire 203 starts at the Sunshine Coast in the past 12 months for 45 wins and 58 placings.

The 24-year-old who walks around at 59 kilograms is constantly fighting weight for his role as a top flight jockey.

With a number of big wins to his name aboard Group One winning gelding Niccanova, Orman has received high praise from a number of elite personnel within the racing community.

Orman has proved with his strong race day performances so early on in his career he is in the conversation for one of best jockeys at the Sunshine Coast track.
