Brothers Sunshine Coast rugby union club has taken a huge step forward this season fielding its first ever senior men’s and women's teams since the club was founded more than 10 years ago.

The club that had promised a senior rugby set up since entering the junior competition in 2011, would compete in the new Sunshine Coast Friday night cup and senior women’s competitions.

President Mike Haines said it was a very exciting time.

“It’s massive for us and we’ve pushed very hard for our players to come together and compete,” he said.

“We have a very strong junior club and for our older juniors it’s a plan we have had in place for the last two years so for those boys to really start to filter through it’s great to see.”

Haines said he hoped the club can continue to expand into the a-grade, reserve grade and senior colts competitions in the next few years.

“Our main aim is to step into those senior Saturday competitions further down the track, as soon as we can find the volume of players that are required,” he said.

“I know that from next year our women‘s, senior colts and Friday night reserve grade teams won’t be an issue for us given the volume we have in our junior teams.”

Sunshine Coast Rugby Union president Mike Aronsten said it was an amazing achievement off the back of the new Friday night social competition.

“We have always had two or three teams on the Coast that have only had reserve grade teams so it has been tough to incorporate those clubs into the Saturday match day program,” he said.

“We were battling for a while as we wanted to find a way those clubs could host senior matches and we were gobsmacked with the initial response to the idea of a Friday night competition.”

Aronsten said the idea followed from the Brisbane rugby union third division which had expanded to 18 teams and is also played at the end of the working week.

The competition will feature teams from USC Barbarians, Nambour, Maroochydore, Gympie, Caboolture and Brothers and up to three matches per night would be played at the same venue.

“It is a combination of some older players that can’t play on Saturdays anymore and for some players that still want to be involved from a more social aspect,” Aronsten said.
